Many people have come to me saying “Oh, because you went to Art School and took Art Classes your a great artist.” “The only reason your a good artist is because someone taught you.” and “Yeah, but you went to Art Classes - real artists are self taught.”

What do you people actually think happens in Art Classes? The teacher divulges the secrets of the universe and instantly you become the best artist there ever was?

Hell naw!

The only thing that has ever happened in an Art Class is that the teacher gives us materials - a subject - and access to constant critique and pointers (if the teacher is actually competent and not an asshole), the same pointers you would get on the internet from someone who probably knows what they are doing. Art classes only give you the means to improve and draw.

Just because someone doesn’t take art classes doesn’t mean they aren’t going to be amazing and just because someone does take them doesn’t mean they are going to be amazing.

Though if you do get a competent teacher watching them work live is so much more amazing and useful than a recording, my god.

Let me tell you something about today. Today was the hottest day of the year in New Jersey, I woke up sweating despite air conditioning because it was 95 degrees. Now, i did what any logical person would do and I put on my favorite pair of shorts so i wouldn’t be sweating throughout the day.

Even in my shorts i was sweating my balls off but I went through half of my day as normal, no boys stared at my ass or tried to grope me in public yet when i went to the the cafeteria a teacher told me to go to the office because he finds my shorts inappropriate. I head down to the office to find a group of girls wearing shorts and skirts sitting in a small room in the office, we where all ordered to call our parents or to change into the clothes they had offered us from the school store. These items of clothing included sweatpants and a large heavy sweatshirt. I obviously refused to where those because it was 95 degrees and when you are sweating the key to cool down is NOT to put on more clothes. They told me I would have to stay in that room the whole day if it came down to it.

I was able to leave the office when my friend gave me a pair of yoga pants. The man who made me go down to the office brought down several other girls as I was leaving, at this point they didn’t care how long the shorts where they just sent everyone who was wearing a pair down. They warned me that if I put my shorts back on they would right me up.

I put them back on anyway because just walking down the hallway in those yoga pants made me faint, dizzy,and extremely hot. Thats the main issue, it is hot enough for people to pass out in school but to the school system they would rather a girl suffer from a heat stroke then to have a boy become turned on. My shorts don’t say “COme fuck me in the middle of class” they say,”Its warm out”

The sexualizing of innocent students is not okay

I hate our school so much

It’s called LONGER SHORTS. Please. I live in Florida and had to abide by my PUBLIC school’s dress code of 3-5” above the knee. Yeah, it’s hot but shorts are getting more up girl’s asses every year. These shorts aren’t SO bad but…kids just don’t understand. It’s not a lack of feminism…it’s called self respect and following the rules. If anything YOGA pants are feminine. Skin tight clothing that hugs your rear end and under regions? I’d say that would be more cause for concern.

These rules are put i place for a reason. Girls want to complain about a guy calling her a slut? Well, here you go. Complaining about your shorts is one quick way to achieve such. Trust me, I understand how hot it could be…but while it may not look such a way to you when you wear these shorts - it says it to the boys around you.

I HIGHLY doubt every girl wearing shorts that are close to their knees was asked to change. Half of these girls more than likely had their rear ends hanging out of their shorts. This is the teenage mindset of “OMGaaaaaa, make things worse than what they are! BOOBOO!”

Jersey kids complaining about the heat makes us South Floridians laugh. RISKING STUDENTS HEALTH, OMGAAAH! Go home if it’s that hot. I’m sure there was A/C in your school.

I am sorry if I sound crude but kids these days complaining about the above and having complete disregard for the rules bothers me. Go home if it’s that hot. Your shorts end at your ass and if you bent over, you can prob see it. That’s the problem.

and that is my yearly rant because I do not know why this shit was in my feed to begin with.

Uhm, Pardon me for just a second.

As much as I hate getting involved in crazy internet arguments, this is one that I need to throw my two cents in on, because it makes me quite cross.

As an Australian, living in Australian heat, shorts like that are very common here. Knee length just doesn’t cut it when your shoes are melting into the footpath. A dress code is fine and dandy, but it needs to take into consideration the comfort of its students during hotter months. Learning is tough enough after all.

I understand how you feel, but your argument is a tad wonky.

“Self respect” doesn’t necessarily mean more modest clothes. For some people it is, and that’s ok! But sometimes people need to wear things that A-give them confidence and B-Are comfy for them.

And another thing, nobody deserves to get called a slut, and perhaps we shouldn’t be shaming the girls in shorts but rather the guys who think it’s ok to go around saying derogatory stuff like that.

I could go on for days about this, but I feel a little silly for getting into an internet fight as it is.

Have a nice day, and please think about this issue a little more.

Most places in America have a desscode no more than 5 inches above knees. In Australia it may be common, but we usually don’t have 100+ degree weather in most places here, and when we do if it’s a danger schools usually don’t let students go outside and have air conditioning on.

I don’t agree with saying slut and all that mumbo jumbo, but I do agree that you do NOT need to wear shorts that short in school?? I’ve gone to 10+ schools in various places around the country and all of them have had the same or similar dress codes, and never have I had an issue with the heat and needing to wear shorts as short as depicted, EXCEPT during PE WHERE WE GO OUTSIDE DIRECTLY INTO THE HEAT, AND WE ARE GIVEN GYM SHORTS which are a bit shorter and allowed to be, along with plenty of water breaks.

If you are starting to get dizzy and stuff, don’t whine about why you can’t wear short shorts, go see the nurse and drink plenty of water?? Ask to stay inside in air conditioning because the heat is making you feel faint??

Wearing shorter shorts doesn’t solve a heat problem.

This is basically the problem with the entire modern educational system.

Time to do unpopular opinion? Time to do unpopular opinion.

Balancing a checkbook is applied addition and subtraction, stuff of the third grade. Okay, yeah, it is a failure of the modern educational system if he hasn’t learned it by now.

Imaginary numbers interact with real numbers (1, 2, π, 1.5, etc) for complex numbers, and are useful if you want to get into engineering or science — you know, high paying jobs.

Remember Tomb Raider? How they make her turn? Quaternions, which use THREE sets of imaginary numbers.

Like how your cell phone gets reception? That requires resonance, the understanding of which can be aided by complex numbers.

And don’t even get me started in the more exotic physics like fluid dynamics or quantum mechanics. That is, the forefront of how planes fly and how computer chips work.

There’s this term, innumeracy, that is to math what illiteracy is to english. One thing that bugs me is when ignorance is paraded about, when one acts as if math is an optional knowledge. Doubly so when it’s the very thing holding them back.

The failure is not in teaching these things, but the lack of teaching about why we should care about these things.

There’s a difference between anti-intellectualism and pragmatism. Applicability is just as important as context. Knowing how a cell phone gets reception is all well and good, but not every child is going to grow up to be an engineer.

“The world needs ditch diggers too.” Sounds fatalistic, but it’s true and there’s nothing wrong with that. The collapse of American manufacturing centers, the rise of corporate outsourcing, and the tension about illegal immigrants “takin’ mah jerb” are direct results of this idea that every child should earn a college degree and become some brilliant scientist or hotshot CEO.

So how about teaching things that have real world application for everyone? Like how to manage finances? How to manage people? Hell, like how to manage yourself? We’ve got young people literally falling apart because they think they can run on an exclusive diet of cigarettes and Red Bull. This problem scales all the way up to rampant corruption in the health care sector because people are more concerned with making money than treating patients.

No one is saying “math isn’t important.” But the educational system itself is flawed. We cram a kid’s head full of facts and figures, then shuffle him or her off to the next grade, to do it all again, twelve times over. It’s not until college that we get to decide for ourselves which professional interests we might pursue, assuming college is even an option, even then often burying ourselves in a mountain of debt.

The entire system needs to be overhauled. The first fives or six grades are a good time for those facts and figures, because a child’s mind is like a sponge and they enjoy accumulating raw data. But after that, we need to identify and encourage growth in the areas that they show an individual affinity for. A child who excels at math can be directed down a sciences track, which may lead to future specializations in engineering and medicine; a child who has a talent for writing can enter the fine arts track, to later become a writer or journalist; and so on.

There may be some overlap, such as budding artists and doctors both learning anatomy, the opportunity to cross-specialize or jump tracks altogether, and naturally all students enroll in the general ‘life skills’ track. Every couple years, students and counselors reevaluate what they are best suited for and guide them towards a fulfilling future career. But waiting until you’re already a legal adult, thrown into the world and expected to fend for yourself, is too late to be thinking about these things. I think the state of the world economy is proof enough of that.

Fair enough. My education experience was atypical (private school growing up) and not recent enough (graduated in ‘99) to compare. But fully agreed that there needs to be less emphasis on rote memorization (especially for tests) and more for critical thinking, and application of what was taught into real world situations.

An interesting aside on how quickly life skills become outdated: my dad was raised in what is now Silicon Valley. In his high school, one of the classes was farming, because that was a life skill in the then agricultural area.

Actually at least in America, they do have classes that teach those things (checkbooks, stock market, how to invest money, cooking, sewing, ect.) just that they are usually “elective” classes and most students don’t take them because they’d rather take something easy that requires minimal effort to pass so there you go.

Practice makes perfect? Not so much

Turns out, that old “practice makes perfect” adage may be overblown.

New research led by Michigan State University’s Zach Hambrick finds that a copious amount of practice is not enough to explain why people differ in level of skill in two widely studied activities, chess and music.

In other words, it takes more than hard work to become an expert. Hambrick, writing in the research journal Intelligence, said natural talent and other factors likely play a role in mastering a complicated activity.

“Practice is indeed important to reach an elite level of performance, but this paper makes an overwhelming case that it isn’t enough,” said Hambrick, associate professor of psychology.

The debate over why and how people become experts has existed for more than a century. Many theorists argue that thousands of hours of focused, deliberate practice is sufficient to achieve elite status.

Hambrick disagrees.

“The evidence is quite clear,” he writes, “that some people do reach an elite level of performance without copious practice, while other people fail to do so despite copious practice.”

Hambrick and colleagues analyzed 14 studies of chess players and musicians, looking specifically at how practice was related to differences in performance. Practice, they found, accounted for only about one-third of the differences in skill in both music and chess.

So what made up the rest of the difference?

Based on existing research, Hambrick said it could be explained by factors such as intelligence or innate ability, and the age at which people start the particular activity. A previous study of Hambrick’s suggested that working memory capacity – which is closely related to general intelligence – may sometimes be the deciding factor between being good and great.

While the conclusion that practice may not make perfect runs counter to the popular view that just about anyone can achieve greatness if they work hard enough, Hambrick said there is a “silver lining” to the research.

“If people are given an accurate assessment of their abilities and the likelihood of achieving certain goals given those abilities,” he said, “they may gravitate toward domains in which they have a realistic chance of becoming an expert through deliberate practice.”

This is important.

Finally an actual study on this. Truth right there.

Yup, I’ll agree on that. I wonder if they’ll ever be able to tell whether we’re going to be great at something before we waste countless hours doing it.
